Beef & Pudding has opened its doors to the public following a major refurbishment carried out by DV8 Designs. The Warrington-based architecture and interior design practice headed by Lee Birchall, have created a modern day interior for the Manchester based gastro pub.

Fresh editions such as the installation of a state-of-the-art kitchen, designed by Monarch Direct are one of many contemporary elements that have been introduced – offering an exciting new dimension to the property.

Our vision was to create a modernistic urban pub and kitchen, which counterbalanced both stylish and classical attributes.” Lee Birchall, DV8

In order to create a true rustic feel to the venue, DV8 incorporated ultra-modern décors with a roughed-up edge. The choice of raw materials such as wood flooring, the brickwork and steel work were chosen to suit the modern design.

These were then all complemented with other cleaner items, such as the white kitchen tiles and tan leather, which gives the job a sense of warmth and comfort.

Additionally, they have added many interesting decorative elements to accentuate the overall architectural design. A notable feature in the space is the bull on the tiles – a quirky piece, which DV8 felt would make a great talking point for patrons.

When space planning, relocating the existing bar from the centre of the space to the side made the most sense, allowing for a more open plan area, that can be divided into a bar and restaurant when necessary.

The fact the site had been out of use for some time presented a challenge – To complement the existing rustic elements such as the metal work with pops of colour, like the fixed seating and colour in the flooring. DV8 had to be sure that they got this balance right, to help sell the whole design.

Some areas worked in the studio’s favour in the design sense to find that balance. They said:

We originally had proposed for a plasterboard ceiling throughout, however during demolition works, this exposed concrete ceiling was revealed which we decided to leave. It ended up being a part of the concluding design.”

The brief of the new design was to appeal to the public and attract a broad spectrum of customers. Originally established as The Crown on Booth Street, Beef & Pudding showcases the award winning offerings of chef patron and co-owner of the New Moon Pub Company, David Mooney.

Lee and his team have done a fantastic job in fulfilling the brief. Everything about the design is what David and I had previously envisioned.” said business partner Paul Newman.
